Blue Fridays: Wear Blue for Public School Education and Educators (#BlueforMSteachers)

01/31/2018

Chris Chism, a veteran MPE member and educator who serves as principal of Pearl High School, recently shared two posts on Facebook regarding his frustration with state leaders’ push for school choice here in Mississippi. These powerful posts are also posted in the MPE News section of this website. Chism wrote his messages after Governor Bryant, Lt. Governor Reeves, and Speaker Gunn all donned yellow scarves at last week’s school choice rally at the capitol. In his first post on January 23, Chism urged Bryant, Reeves and Gunn to wear blue scarves in support of Mississippi public school educators who teach ALL students. In his January 28 post, Chism shared that public education needs a champion and someone who wears blue in support of what educators do each and every day. He created the hashtag # BlueforMSteachers. Chris’s posts gave MPE Executive Director Kelly Riley the idea to start a Blue Fridays movement. We are encouraging you and your co-workers to wear blue each Friday throughout the legislative session, beginning this Friday, February 2. Encourage your friends and family members to also wear blue on Fridays in support of educators throughout the state. We chose Fridays because legislators usually head home on Fridays and we are hoping that they will see educators and public citizens around town wearing blue. Take pictures of your grade level or department team all wearing blue and email them to Kelly (Kelly@mpe.org) so that she may share your pictures on Facebook and Twitter. We hope you will also share the pictures on social media and use the hashtag #BlueforMSteachers. Let’s make Mississippi blue on Fridays…and let’s see if any state leaders will join us! Wear blue this Friday!
